This is the most lovely station, spacious, airy, clean curves, light, real trouble-taker over all the detail. Each day thousands of commuters squeeze through these ticket- barriers heading for their offices in the engine-rooms of the twenty-first century business.When the old streets of the City became overcrowded with new buildings, the money moved east transforming the old Docklands into a mini-Manhattan. Out went the old warehouses and barges, in came New-York-style skyscrapers. Canary Wharf with no history is now the old City's rival, a triumph of energy and efficiency. This is where the power now lies. No longer with the church, no longer with the politicians, but with these giant corporations. And these are their shining temples, the buildings of our age. Arrogant buildings thrusting themselves on us.But how many will survive to take their place alongside those of the past and tell us the story of the twenty-first century ? We're living in an age of constant change and our new buildings fit that pattern; but they occupy a different world, separate from our own more private lives. Most of us live somewhere like this. After nearly a year travelling the length and the breadth of Britain, I'm coming home. This is Polegate, a little town under the South Downs. It's nothing very grand about Polegate, nothing very beautiful about Polegate, but it's my hometown and I like it. It's one of the thousands of towns and suburbs in Britain that the architects never visited and the planners overlooked. There's been no attempt at style in Polegate which gives our town a style all of its own. Polegate is not exactly swinging but it's a friendly place, with some good shops . This is one of the best shops in Polegate [...] Like so many places in Britain, Polegate is a mixture of old and new. It all adds to the hidden charm : there's a medieval chapel, a georgian mansion, a bit of victoriana and plenty of bungalows built in the nineteen-sixties. The latest addition on the edge of the town is a new housing estate, which tells a lot about what we seem to want. Architects are always trying to persuade us to accept new ways of living, little white concrete boxes, very efficient living machines or villages in the sky. But the truth is the most of us prefer houses like this, with a touch of the victorian, the elizabethan, or the georgian in them. It's all those we accept for our grand public buildings, for big offices, fot theathers , for concert halls, for airports. But when it comes to our own homes, we actually prefer a taste of the past. It just goes to prove the point that our buildings say at all : if you want to trace the story of how we became who we are, you'll need a new look at how we built Britain '' §

§ '' Canary Wharf è una stazione di incredibile grandiosità. Tutto questo giusto per far uscire la gente dai loro treni e farla risalire in superfice. Questa è la stazione più attraente, spaziosa, ariosa, curve pulite, luce, reale ossessione per i dettagli. Ogni giorno migliaia di pendolari si infilano attraverso queste barriere-biglietteria puntando verso i loro uffici nelle stanze dei bottoni della finanza del XXI secolo. Quando le antiche strade delle City divennero sovraffollate di nuovi edifici, il Denaro si è mosso verso est, trasformando i vecchi Docklands [il sito del porto fluviale di Londra- il più grande del mondo fino agli anni '70 quando poi fu dismesso per esser spostato alla foce del Tamigi -ndr] in una mini-Manhattan. Via i vecchi magazzini delle merci e le chiatte fluviali, subentrarono grattacieli di stile New-Yorkese. Canary Wharf , senza una sua storia è ora la rivale della antica City, un trionfo di energia ed efficienza. E' qui che ora risiede il potere; non più con la Chiesa , non più coi politici, ma con queste giganti Multinazionali. E questi sono i loro scintillanti templi, gli edifici della nostra epoca. Superbi edifici che incombono su di noi. Ma quanti sorpavviveranno per prender posto affianco a quelli del passato e raccontarci la storia del XXI secolo? Stiamo vivendo una età di costanti cambiamenti e i nostri edifici odierni si adattano a quel modello. Essi però occupano un mondo separato da quello delle nostre vite private. La maggior parte di noi vive in luoghi come questo.. Dopo circa un anno passato a viaggiare per la Gran Bretagna in lungo ed in largo, sto tornando a casa. Questa è Polegate, un piccolo paesino al di sotto [della regione] dei South Downs. Non c'è niente di grandioso riguardo a Polegate, niente di straordinariamente bello, ma è il mio paese natale e mi piace. E' una delle migliaia di cittadine della G. Bretagna che gli architetti non hanno mai visitate e gli urbanisti mai supervisionate. Non c'è stato alcun tentativo di fare dello stile a Polegate che possa dargli un carattere tutto suo proprio. Polegate non è esattamente niente di esaltante ma è un posto amichevole, con alcuni buoni negozi. Questo è uno dei migliori negozi di Polegate. [...] Come tanti posti in G.Bretagna , Polegate è una mistura di vecchio e nuovo. E ciò aumenta il suo fascino nascosto: c'è una cappella medievale, una magione georgiana, un pizzico di tempi vittoriani, e una quantità di villette bifamiliari costruite negli anni '60. Il più recente ampliamento al margine del paese è un lotto di fabbricati che ci dice molto su quel che sembra noi desideriamo. Gli architetti cercano sempre di persuaderci ad accettare nuovi modi di vivere, piccole scatolette bianche di cemento, efficientissime macchine abitative, villaggi nei cieli. Ma la verità è che la maggior parte di noi preferisce case come questa, con un tocco di vittoriano , elisabettiano o di georgiano in esse. Quelli là li accettiamo per i nostri grandiosi edifici pubblici, per i grandi uffici , i teatri e le sale da concerto, per gli aeroporti. Ma quando si tratta delle nostre proprie case, noi davvero preferiamo un assaggio del passato. E ciò sta a dimostrare il vero punto, che le nostre abitazioni mostrano chiaramente: se volete tracciare la storia di come siamo divenuti quelli che oggi siamo, dovrete gettare uno sguardo con occhi nuovi su come abbiamo costruito la Gran Bretagna''
